Medicare coverage and bulk billing
Yes, when the scan meets the applicable MBS item criteria. MBS PET rules require a request from a specialist or consultant physician, together with eligible provider and facility arrangements. The reason for the scan and any item-specific limits also matter; a specialist request alone does not guarantee a rebate.
$0 for that service
Services Australia explains that bulk billing means the provider accepts the Medicare benefit as full payment. Confirm whether every part of your appointment is bulk billed.
Provider guides in this page include Medicare-funded scans with a private gap. Ask which MBS items apply, what the full fee is, and whether a tracer or other service is charged separately.
An MBS schedule fee, Medicare benefit, clinic charge and patient gap are different amounts. Item 61505 is for an accompanying CT used for localisation or attenuation correction; it is not the whole PET scan fee.

Yes. Several providers in this guide offer bulk billing for PET scans that meet their Medicare and referral criteria. Bulk billing means no out-of-pocket charge for that service. Confirm the exact scan, referral and any separately charged services with the provider before booking.
Yes. Cabrini’s guide lists a $295 per-visit gap for private patients with Medicare-funded PET items. I-MED’s Central Melbourne outpatient guide lists a $445 minimum private-patient gap for eligible Alzheimer’s PET, or $285 for pensioners and Health Care Card holders. These are provider-specific gaps, not whole-scan fees.
The provider replies include GP-referral quotes of $550 in Newcastle, $950 at Nepean Health Hub and approximately $705 in Brisbane. Those providers say specialist referrals meeting the relevant criteria may qualify for Medicare coverage or bulk billing. Send the referral to the clinic to confirm the applicable fee; a specialist referral alone does not guarantee a free scan.
These figures come from five provider email confirmations, two provider guides and one current ACT hospital tariff. Four further sources describe billing policies. Each provider source is counted once. They are separate from patient-paid invoices and do not establish a patient median.
