Day-by-day food steps sit with the treating sheet and with CostDoc's colonoscopy preparation guide. Related cost and procedure pages start from the gastroenterology hub.

What Is Moviprep and What Is It Used for?
Moviprep is a bowel preparation that makes the bowels clean so they are ready for examination or surgery.
What the product information says about taste
Australian consumer medicine information describes Moviprep as lemon flavoured. The prepared solution may be stored in the refrigerator, and the leaflet says it may be easier to drink when chilled. Follow the preparation, diet and timing instructions supplied by the treating service or pharmacist; do not add ingredients unless they advise it.
It is a bowel-cleansing powder, not a meal plan, used before a procedure that needs an empty colon. The listed use is bowel cleansing before bowel endoscopy, lower gastrointestinal tract radiology or digestive tract surgery.

The pack is two Sachet A and two Sachet B: four sachets, all needed for one treatment. Each litre is one large sachet and one small sachet dissolved together in water. The powder is lemon flavoured.
How the camera itself moves through the bowel sits on CostDoc's colonoscopy procedure guide. Moviprep is the named product that empties that bowel beforehand.
| Pack fact | What the sources state |
|---|---|
| Sachets | Two A and two B, four in total. |
| One litre | Sachet A plus Sachet B in water. |
| Full course | Two litres. |
| Age | Not recommended below 18 years, because it has not been studied in children. |
| Pharmacy | Schedule 3, pharmacist only, 4 sachet pack without a prescription. |
Unopened sachets are stored below 25 degrees Celsius, with a listed shelf life of 3 years. Once mixed, the solution may be used at once or cooled, and it should be used within 24 hours.
How Do the Two Moviprep Doses Work Before a Colonoscopy?
Each course is two one-litre drinks, taken as a split pair or as a single two-litre block. A litre should be drunk over one to two hours, then the second litre repeats that process. The CMI says to try a glassful every 10 to 15 minutes.
The ACSQHC consumer leaflet gives an example split of about 6pm and about 6am, each litre followed by an extra 500 mL of clear fluid. The doctor may tell you different times. Mix by putting the powder in the vessel first, then water, and wait up to five minutes until it has dissolved.
Timing also depends on anaesthesia:
| Timing question | What the PI and CMI state |
|---|---|
| Split dose | One litre evening before, one litre early morning. |
| Single dose | Two litres the evening before, or two litres on the morning of the procedure. |
| Extra fluid | A further one litre of clear liquid across the course. |
| With general anaesthesia | Finish Moviprep and other clear fluids at least two hours before the start. |
| Fasting line | The CMI says stop all fluids at least two hours before, and that the doctor should give the NIL BY MOUTH time. |

Stay close to a toilet once drinking starts. Watery motions mean it is working, and bloating may come first.
The hospital sheet still wins on clock times. Follow it so the test does not have to be redone.
What Can You Drink While Taking Moviprep?
Once the first litre starts, only listed clear fluids sit beside the two litres of Moviprep, not solid food. The mix itself does not replace ordinary fluid intake, so extra clear liquid still matters.
- Water, clear soup, black tea or coffee without milk or non-dairy creamer.
- Fruit juice without pulp, soft drinks and cordials that are not coloured red or purple.
- Nothing red or purple, because that colour can stain the view.
- No solid food from the start of a split or evening two-litre course until after the procedure.
Low-fibre days, white diet plates and a printable checklist are covered in the colonoscopy preparation sequence, the colonoscopy diet checklist, and the colonoscopy white diet page.
Which Medicines and Health Conditions Change Moviprep Use?
Other tablets, thickeners, diabetes insulin and some gut or metabolic conditions change how this powder is used. Oral medicines taken within one hour before, during, or one hour after a dose may be flushed through unabsorbed.
| Topic | What to raise with the treating team |
|---|---|
| Other tablets | One-hour window either side of a litre, plus during the drink. |
| The pill | Cover is likely incomplete from an hour before the first dose until after the investigation; use another method for that cycle. |
| Insulin-dependent diabetes | Only liquids are taken, so insulin dosing should be balanced with the physician first. |
| Starch thickeners | Macrogol can liquefy drinks that need to stay thick for swallowing problems. |
| Blood thinners and other regular medicines | Ask whether prescribed, over-the-counter, herbal or supplement medicines continue, especially blood thinners. |
| Phenylketonuria | The powder contains aspartame, a source of phenylalanine. |
| Sodium or potassium limits | A full course contains 8.4 g of sodium and 1.1 g of potassium. |
Do not take it if there is bowel perforation or obstruction, ileus, gastric retention, severe inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis or toxic megacolon, phenylketonuria, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, known hypersensitivity, unconsciousness, or severe dehydration. There is no experience in pregnancy or lactation; use only if the physician considers it essential. Use caution in older or frail people, and in those with poor health, significant kidney impairment, arrhythmia, or electrolyte risk.
What Side Effects Can Moviprep Cause?
Watery diarrhoea is expected. That is the medicine doing the job, not a surprise extra. Most people also get gut symptoms while the bowel is emptying.
| Frequency in the PI | Effects named |
|---|---|
| Very common | Abdominal pain, nausea, abdominal distension, anal discomfort, malaise, fever. |
| Common | Vomiting, indigestion, sleep disturbance, dizziness, headache, chills, thirst, hunger. |
| Reported, rate not known | Rash, hives, itch, shortness of breath, swelling, anaphylaxis. |
Mild nausea or bloating can ease with a short pause. Dizziness, fever or a severe headache can mean dehydration or allergy. You can report suspected reactions to your doctor or through the TGA reporting-problems service.
| Question area | What to clarify before proceeding |
|---|---|
| Procedure team | Who is responsible for assessment, the bowel-prep product, and each stage of the colonoscopy |
| Written plan | The proposed procedure, expected scope, follow-up pathway and document handover |
| Risk discussion | Personal risks, benefits, alternatives and when to seek help |
| Quote scope | Inclusions, exclusions, potential additional costs and cancellation terms |
| Aftercare | Contact arrangements and continuity of care after the procedure, including out of hours |
When Should You Stop Moviprep and Get Help?
Stop and call if the bowel does not move, if breathing or swelling change, or if pain or bleeding is sudden. If there is no bowel movement within six hours of taking it, stop the intake and contact the doctor immediately.
- No motion in six hours: stop drinking and call.
- Severe bloating, distension or abdominal pain: slow the drink or pause until it eases.
- Sudden abdominal pain or rectal bleeding: get prompt medical review for possible ischaemic colitis.
- Allergy signs: extreme fatigue, palpitations, sudden severe itch, rash or hives, shortness of breath, wheezing, or swelling of the face, lips or tongue. Stop and go to the nearest emergency department.
- Cannot finish the prep, or serious dizziness, fever or headache: contact the doctor.
Informed consent still applies: a voluntary decision made with knowledge of the benefits and risks. Raise a concern first with the practitioner or health service, then with the state or territory health complaints body, or with Ahpra for a safety issue about a registered practitioner.
Is Moviprep Right for You?
It depends on the procedure that needs a clean bowel, the written hospital sheet, and whether any listed caution or contraindication applies. Suitability is a conversation with the treating team.

| Situation | What the sources support |
|---|---|
| Adult colonoscopy, endoscopy, bowel x-ray or digestive tract surgery | This is the licensed use. |
| Under 18 years | Not recommended; it has not been studied in children. |
| Severe IBD, obstruction, perforation, PKU, G6PD deficiency, severe dehydration | Listed as do-not-use. |
| Pregnancy or breastfeeding | Only if the physician considers it essential. |
| Older, frail, kidney, heart-rhythm or electrolyte risk | Use with caution, not as a self-pick. |
Check the individual on the Ahpra public register, not the clinic brand. Registration means they may practise, and it publishes conditions. It is not a badge for this powder.
How Much Does a Colonoscopy With Moviprep Cost in Australia?
What you pay moves with whether the colonoscopy is done as a public or private patient, which hospital or clinic is used, and what is in the written quote. Current colonoscopy prices, and whether Medicare covers colonoscopy, are on CostDoc's colonoscopy cost page and colonoscopy Medicare page.
CostDoc compares patient-reported and modelled colonoscopy prices nationally. The live range is a starting point for questions, not a quote. It moves as new reports come in.
- Setting: a colonoscopy can be done at a public or private hospital or clinic.
- Incomplete prep: if the written sheet is not followed, the test may need to be redone.
- Who does the work: check the individual practitioner on the Ahpra register, not only the facility name.
- Quote scope: ask what the figure includes, what it excludes, and the cancellation terms.
